What is the scheme?
The redevelopment scheme was launched to improve facilities and access at the church into the 21st century.
As part of the scheme the old church building has been demolished and the site is now used as a car park.
The existing Sunday school building, which has been used as the church for a number of years, has been upgraded.
A new ramped entrance and porch has been created along with storage space and a disabled toilet. The building has been redecorated, the main part carpeted and a loop system installed for those with hearing difficulties.
Why was the old building demolished?
The coal mines came to Blackwell bringing with them the needs of a local community.
This church has now served the village community for over 120 years.
But the large Victorian building was completely out of date and unsuited both for worship in the 21st century and for communal activities.
Over the years it had been badly affected by subsidence caused by the local coal mine which is now defunct.
Why this appeal?
There was a need to undertake major refurbishment of the present Sunday School building for use as a church and community building more suited to the 21st century.
There was also the need to suit present day needs and requirements in a way that our old Victorian building was not fitted to serve the present day.
Work Objectives included
A lot of the money has already been raised for the scheme through local fund raising efforts but support continues to be needed for this and further projects including upgrading the car park.
